tvOS 27 Finally Gives Apple TV Better Music, Podcasts, and Text Controls
tvOS 27 is not a dramatic reinvention of Apple TV, and that may be its best quality. Apple has concentrated on three everyday parts of the experience: listening to music, watching podcasts, and reading text from across the room. The update is available for the second- and third-generation Apple TV 4K.
The changes are easy to summarize, but each solves a real limitation. Apple Music can now play high-resolution lossless audio up to 24-bit/192 kHz and offers improved song transitions. The redesigned Podcasts app supports video shows. A new accessibility setting can enlarge text across apps that support Apple’s Dynamic Type system.
Music gets the most substantial upgrade
The Music app has a redesigned layout with a sidebar that makes it easier to move among recommendations, the library, videos, and other sections. That is useful on a television, where long horizontal rows can become tedious to navigate with a remote.
The headline addition is high-resolution lossless playback up to 24-bit/192 kHz. For listeners with a capable receiver, amplifier, or speaker system, Apple TV 4K can now serve as a more serious source for Apple Music. This is not an automatic sound-quality boost for every living room, however. Apple notes that support depends on the song, network conditions, and the connected audio hardware. A television’s built-in speakers are unlikely to reveal the difference that a good home-audio setup can.
tvOS 27 also adds improved song transitions. Instead of leaving an abrupt pause between tracks, the Music app can blend one song into the next for playlists and parties. Apple describes the feature as a more DJ-like listening experience. It is a convenience rather than a reason to replace hardware, but it makes Apple TV more pleasant as a shared music player.
Full access to Apple Music’s catalog and major features still requires a subscription. Availability also varies by track and region, so the 24-bit/192 kHz ceiling should be treated as the maximum supported format rather than the quality of every song.
Video podcasts finally fit the biggest screen
Apple has rebuilt the Podcasts app for tvOS 27 and added video podcast support. That turns Apple TV into a more natural place for shows designed to be watched as well as heard. Viewers can follow video conversations from the couch without sending an iPhone or iPad screen to the television.
The redesigned app keeps the familiar basics: personalized recommendations, editorial collections, followed shows, saved episodes, and a synced listening position across Apple devices. If you begin an episode on an iPhone, the Apple TV app can pick up from the same account and library.
Video does not replace audio. The app still handles traditional podcasts, and a show can be used in whichever format the creator provides. Some programs may require a paid subscription, with prices set by their creators. Content and features can also differ by country, region, and hardware model.
This change may have more impact than it first appears. Video podcasts have often lived in separate streaming apps or web services, leaving the Podcasts app focused mainly on listening. Bringing both formats together reduces the need to remember which platform carries a particular version of a show.
Text controls address a basic television problem
Television interfaces tend to assume that everyone sits the same distance from the screen and reads small labels equally well. tvOS 27 adds a broader text-size control for apps that support Dynamic Type, along with an option to display text in bold.
To change it, open Settings, choose Accessibility, then select Display. From there, turn on Bold Text, adjust the Text Size slider, or use both. Compatible apps respond to the chosen size without requiring a separate adjustment inside every app.
The limitation is app support. Dynamic Type has to be implemented by the developer, so the setting will not necessarily resize every label in every third-party app. Even with that boundary, one central control is more useful than hunting through multiple settings menus.
How to install tvOS 27
Apple lists tvOS 27 for Apple TV 4K models from the second and third generations. On a supported device, go to Settings > System > Software Updates > Update Software. If the update appears, choose Download and Install. Keep the Apple TV connected to power until the process finishes.
You can also enable Automatically Update from the same Software Updates menu. That is the simpler option for a living-room device that is usually left connected.
Owners of supported hardware do not need a new box to get the useful parts of this release. tvOS 27 is modest, but its priorities make sense: better audio for capable systems, a proper home for video podcasts, and text that more people can comfortably read.
