Meta Glasses Add a Visual Data Opt-Out
Meta is rolling out a switch for the camera visuals its AI glasses collect during AI interactions. Turn off storage and, according to Meta, that visual data is used to finish your request but is not kept afterward for product improvement or AI training. I would check this setting before using Live AI around a desk or on a train: the camera may see a document, a screen, or another person along with the object you asked about.
What the setting actually covers
The switch applies to images and video from Live AI and other AI features that use what the glasses see. With storage on, Meta says this material may help train its models, including through human review. With storage off, future visual data is not stored or made available for that review.
Ordinary photos and videos taken with the capture LED on are separate. Meta says they stay on the glasses until you choose to import them to your phone. The new setting also does not cover voice interactions, images sent to Meta AI through apps such as Instagram or Messenger, or metadata such as camera settings and AI-generated descriptions. Meta lists a further exception for images or video that may violate its policies.
Where to find it, and what you give up
In the Meta AI phone app, open your glasses settings, tap Meta AI under Experiences, then turn off Store visual data from AI experiences. Engadget reported the rollout on September 25 and says the glasses need to be connected and outside their case. If you have more than one pair, change the setting for each.
There is a trade-off. Meta's help page says visual reminders may be limited or unavailable with storage off. That could matter if you want to look at an item and ask the glasses to remind you about it later. Meta has not named every feature that may be affected. You can change the switch again at any time, but turning it off does not undo visual data already processed.
