Discord Starts New Age Checks, but Most Users Won't Need to Verify

Discord has begun rolling out a new way to sort accounts into teen and adult age groups. The important part for most people: you do not have to upload an ID just to keep chatting. Discord says its system will place more than 90% of users in an age group without asking them to confirm it manually.

What changes for teen accounts

Accounts placed in the 13–17 group get extra protections. Messages from non-friends go to a requests inbox, sensitive images may be blurred or blocked, and age-restricted servers, channels and bot commands stay off-limits. Teens can still message friends, join voice calls and use regular servers. Adults placed in the 18+ group should keep their usual access.

When you might need to confirm your age

If Discord cannot determine your age group—or places an adult in the teen group—you may need to confirm that you are an adult before entering age-restricted spaces or changing certain safety settings. Available methods can include sharing an age range through the Apple App Store or Google Play, a credit card check, Google Wallet, an AgeKey passkey, an on-device video selfie or an ID scan. The choices vary by device and region.

What Discord says it checks

Its automated estimate uses patterns such as the communities and games connected to an account, general activity levels and account history. Discord says the model does not read your messages or listen to calls to make that estimate. For manual checks, the company says it receives an age-group result rather than your ID image, card details or selfie; its verification vendors handle and delete the underlying information.

You can see your status under User Settings → Account Status. If a message asks you to verify by email or text, ignore the link: Discord says its age confirmation happens inside the app, not through those messages.
